Santa's Hotel Rakka

Santa's Hotel Rakka is a beautiful complex with a design hotel, scenic restaurant and full-service apartments. The hotel is located 500 metres from Lake Kilpisjärvi, offering views to the lake, Saana fell and Käsivarsi Wilderness Area.

The wood-built design hotel was built in 2023, and it offers modern hotel rooms with floor to ceiling views to the nature. Panoramic windows face the majestic Saana landscapes, giving you a perfect view of the northern sky; Kilpisjärvi is one of the best places in whole Europe to see the Aurora Borealis

For bigger groups or those who prefer staying in an apartment, we have full-service well-equipped apartments with floor to ceiling windows. So in Rakka you can really feel the closeness of the amazing nature. Every apartment has a private sauna, and some of them have a fireplace to give warmth and atmospheric vibes to the apartment.

For breakfast and dinner in the parade spot of the village we have our scenic restaurant Rakka, also with windows reaching from the floor to the ceiling. Start your day with enjoying our rich Nordic breakfast and the fell views, or dine while watching the darkening night fall down on the village and Käsivarsi Wilderness area.

Activities in the surrounding area include cycling and hiking. You can explore the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area which can be reached within 1 km by foot.

What was the highlight of Santa's Hotel Rakka
Snow, lights, skooters
Nice new room, pleasantly designed, with a very large room-size window, with an unobstructed view into the neighbouring nordic wilderness (birch forest). Animal traces can be seen in the snow. Nordic lights can be seen when they occur, even from the bed. Large, spacious bathroom (without window, though) with a small personal sauna. Kettle (tea, coffee) and mini-bar in the room. Nice, light restaurant (also for breakfast) with mountain views in several directions. Good breakfast buffet with plenty of choice, warm and cold. Parking in front of the hotel rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. Great skiing options in the hills around Kilpisjärvi. With a car, the sea can be reached in about 45min. Well-stocked local shops, despite the remote location.
The room door is directly exposed to the outside (not e.g. a corridor) and is not entirely wind-proof; so there is a draught, especially when there is a storm outside. The room temperature at night was nevertheless too warm, and we did not see how to regulate it. Weather-exposed access to the rooms attracts snow-cover in stormy nights. Might need a jacket to go the breakfast or dinner. In the spacious bathroom, the shower was also spacious but open (no curtain), and without care much of the bathroom would have been flooded. The (two) designer-sinks did not match well with the faucet, as it was way too low, making hand-washing difficult. It was also difficult to fill the kettle or a flask. It seems that noone ever really tested the functionality (though it all looks very nice and new with matching colours etc). The huge mirror was of limited use without adequate lighting. Limited, partially open wardrobe space. Surprisingly for a hotel in such a (winter sports) location, there was no ski storage and maintenance room. However, for storage, some alternative space in a laundry storage room was kindly offered. Beyond the responsibility of any single hotel, the town (and also this hotel) attracts primarily skooter drivers, many from nearby Norway - especially at weekends. Cross-country skiiers are less well catered for than e.g. around Ylläs, Pallas, Luosto or Levi; some designated tracks not maintained at all. Tracks and their starting points are less well sign-posted and can even be a bit difficult to find. The hotel could and should prepare a (sign-posted) short-cut to reach the closest ski track, with is <100m away. Offical access is, however, much longer and involves a walk over potentially icy access roads. If you have a skooter (ski-doo), it's all easy and catered for. There are gaps between the few tracks which require a walk of a few hundred meters. Sometimes unpleasant skooter noise, especially in the mornings and at the weekend.

The location is perfect and apartment really nice. The balcony with evening sun is super.
It would be good to have facilities for clothes drying. Especially when we had 4 people doing outdoor activities every day.
